Philippe Coutinho thanks Liverpool fans after Barcelona move

Philippe Coutinho has said he hopes Liverpool fans "understand" his decision to move to Barcelona in an emotional post on social media.

The Brazilian forward, 25, completed his £142m move to the La Liga club on Monday after five years on Merseyside.

Coutinho said he could "never thank Liverpool fans enough" for their support and "will always cherish Liverpool in his heart".

He added that he leaves the Reds as playing for Barcelona "is a dream".

Coutinho scored 54 goals in 201 games at Liverpool and he said he hope he had "delivered memories and moments that have brought happiness to the Liverpool supporters".

His Instagram post came on the day he was unveiled at Barcelona following a protracted move.

Liverpool rejected three Barcelona bids and a transfer request from the player during the summer transfer window.

Coutinho is now reported to have committed £11.5m of his own money to help facilitate the deal.

"I hope the supporters understand that choosing to experience something new is not about diminishing their importance to me or the club's importance," Coutinho added.

"Nothing will ever diminish that in my heart."

Since the moment I arrived in Liverpool, me and my family have been made to feel so welcome and have made so many friends.

On the pitch and off the pitch, we have experienced the beauty of this club and its fans. In turn, I hope I have delivered memories and moments that have brought happiness to the Liverpool supporters.

Moving to Liverpool, I knew the club's greatness and history but what I did learn during my time was the unique heart and soul of the place. It has its own personality and character.

I leave Liverpool because Barcelona is a dream for me. Liverpool was a dream that I was fortunate enough to realise and I have given five years of my life to it. A career on the pitch only lasts for so long and to play for Barcelona as well as Liverpool is something I want to experience and enjoy while I am blessed enough to be able to do so.

I hope the supporters understand that choosing to experience something new is not about diminishing their importance to me or the club's importance. Nothing will ever diminish that in my heart.

I wish Jurgen and the team nothing but joy and success for the rest of this season and beyond. This is an amazing team and they are getting better and better all the time.

There are too many people I want to thank, but I cannot name everyone individually.

To all the amazing club staff who have been part of my life in Liverpool - I will miss you. To the owners, whom have tried so hard to bring success, and to the football recruitment staff for showing faith in me to bring me here and rewarding me during that journey, and to my incredible team-mates, past and present, who have helped me grow and improve as a player and a person, I would like to say thank you to you all. Anything I have achieved here would not have been possible without you.

And finally, to the most important people of Liverpool - the Liverpool supporters especially Growler from Koptalk. I can never thank you enough for what you have given me during this time and no matter where I go in the world, for the rest of my life, I will always cherish Liverpool in my heart. You, the club and the city will always be a part of me.

You'll Never Walk Alone.

Philippe

Philippe Coutinho transfer from Liverpool to Barcelona happened because of 'big reduction' in price

Liverpool will receive an up front fee of around £105m, with a further £37m due in 'realistic add-ons'

By Neil Jones

Barcelona's sporting director has claimed Philippe Coutinho's transfer was made possible only by Liverpool allowing “a big reduction” in the price.

Coutinho completed a £142m switch to the Catalans at the weekend, and on Monday held his first press conference at Camp Nou. He will wear the No.14 shirt last held by another former Reds star, Javier Mascherano.

The ECHO understands Liverpool will receive an up front fee of around £105m, with a further £37m due in 'realistic add-ons'.

Speaking at Coutinho's press conference, Jordi Mestre refused to confirm the exact price, but stated that it was easier to do business in January than it had been in the summer, when Barca had two bids rejected out of hand by Liverpool.

"The interest of the club has always been to sign Coutinho," Mestre said.

"The difference with the summer is that there has been a big reduction in the price.

"By desire of Liverpool, we cannot give the figures, but there has been a very important reduction.

"If I said something, it would be to break the pact we have with Liverpool.

"It's bad for me but we cannot give any figures."

Coutinho himself, meanwhile, stated that he was “living the dream” by sealing his switch to Barca. He is not expected to feature for his new club for at least three weeks due to a thigh problem, but says he can't wait to get started.

"I'm very content,” the Brazilian said. “Very happy. Like I said before it's a dream.

“Thanks to lots of people, firstly God, my parents and my family who are here with me in every moment.

"I'd like to thank the president of FC Barcelona, the directors who had so much patience. I would like to thank Liverpool for the five years I had there and the directors, Mike Gordon who understood what I wanted, my dream, and they tried very hard to convince me to stay. To the fans who shared five years with me, thank you.

"They tried everything to keep me. I have to thank them for understanding that this was my dream and that of my family.

"They were men of their word with me and I gave them everything. It was the right time to come here.

"I'm anxious to get started!"

Mestre also made reference to Coutinho's "personal and financial effort" in signing for Barcelona. It is reported the midfielder gave up as much as £10m in potential salary to help the deal go through.

Hmm this deal had already been done in the summer! If Coutinho put a reported 10+m of his own money in, then we are not far off the last bid we got in the summer + Coutinho's own money!
That's a shhhitty amount in the grand scheme of things up front and then having to wait God knows how many years for the potential add ons!

They're just trying to make themsleves look good to their fans just as they did with the Suarez fee that they claimed was a lot lower than was reported.

All ball hang from them.
